Operation Veteran Support

Founded in 2004, the mission of Operation Veteran Support (OVS) is to raise the awareness of the need to appreciate and support our Veterans and their families and to extend the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” to all of America's military. Stories abound that focus on the plight of young men and women who are returning home from serving their country and are met with dire physical and financial challenges.

OVS is an organization that is approved by Rotary District 5810 as a service program, but receives no direct financial support. In 2007, OVS encouraged and supported a fundraising effort to match a grant that would build a Fisher House,  a residence for families of Veterans receiving treatment at the North Central Texas Veterans Administration Hospital at Dallas. District 5810 Rotarians can take credit for donating more than $47,000 to the construction of the Fisher House of Dallas. This donation and others that were matched by grants from the Fisher House organization helped reach the $2.5 million goal required to build this facility.

OVS has identified several charitable organizations serving Veterans and their families whose objectives are comparable to the Rotary “Four Way Test”, and who operate with great efficiency. Each organization has a local program with which individual Rotary Clubs and Rotarians have become involved. Rotarians all across District 5810 realize that the sacrifices given by all the brave men and women in our military can never be overstated.
